Yet, much has changed at the Eastin Hotel Makkasan. Seven months of top-to-bottom refurbishment have brought to pass an altogether chicer, cooler and classier hotel. Sleek looks and subtle Eastern accents now combine with a service-focused mindset, making for a contemporary city hotel of considerable vim and vigor. Everything from the neo-Grecian columns of the driveway to the soft wood paneling and gleaming Italian marble of the lobby looks voguish and fresh.

Not that it's all sheen, no substance. A complimentary minibus service now ferries guests to top spots like Siam Square four times a day. And the formally dressed staff come as polished as the floors. "Let me take your bags," implores a doorman, guiding you to the smiles of the reception desk. Check-in is brisk, giving you only just enough time to glance at a skyline that, with a snaking concrete expressway at its centre, is pure Bangkok. Afterwards a complimentary fruit punch lingers, courteously, under your nose, and a staff member beckons you into the lobby bar.

Here - amidst rich earth tone upholstery, dark wood tables and abstract Oriental sculptures - guests surrender the senses to a Zen-inspired realm featuring divine cuisine, a holistic spa, a serene swimming pool and more. Everything at the Eastin now reeks of refinement and class...

Top of the pile are the 130 rooms in three different styles: Superior, Deluxe or Executive Deluxe (280 will be up and running by May 2008).

Although modestly sized (they range from 32 square metres to 35) each is decorated luxuriantly, in sleek ultra-modern style. Their faintly masculine gold, cream and black colour schemes come courtesy of soft cream walls, gold fabric furniture and metallic paint paneling, dark teak fixtures and furnishings, and striped three-tone carpets.

Each also has a delicious white cotton duvet and plump pillows, not to mention a super-comfy bed. Long wooden surfaces with lamp and swivel chair offer plenty of space for laptops and paperwork. And large windows allow daylight to flood in dawn till dusk, when soft art-deco lamps and recessed lighting take over. Bathrooms are exceptional. Gold gilt mirrors, shiny tiling, snazzy washbasins, trendy blue bathrobes and bespoke 'Eastin' toiletries rendering them chic and indulgent.

There isn't much to distinguish rooms, merely small deviations in size, views, layout and accoutrements. However, all come with a host of standard features: soundproof windows with burgundy silk curtains, a bedside control panel (air-con, alarm and light switches), a computerized TV and movie system (ask at reception for movie prices), safety deposit boxes and high-speed Internet (150 baht for 15 minutes, 250 baht for 30 mins, 400 baht for an hour).

Only Superior Rooms though (the cheapest) get a LCD projector system that beams films or TV shows against a wall at the foot of the bed. This is, clearly, recompense for their unconventional layout (the bed sits in the middle of the room) and uninspiring views (most look onto an opposing building). Deluxe Rooms are the same size but have slightly more congenial studio layouts, a huge mirror above the bed, 21-inch flatscreen TVs and views onto spaghetti-junction, the nearby expressway. These are available in double or twin bed combos, the latter having a two-person sofa.

Considering the marginal price difference, we recommend you opt for the largest available room, a 35-square metre Executive Deluxe. Aside from just that little bit extra space, these have bigger mosaic bathrooms with separate walk-in shower/bathtub and a window partition.

The 67 studios are 30 square metres, the 12 one-bedroom apartments 36 square metres, making these by no means the roomiest serviced apartments in town. However, bold architecture brings to mind the 'it's not size that matters, but what you do with it' adage. Designers have done a fantastic job with available space, combining chic minimalism with structural ingenuity to create interiors with a modern glow, spaces that pack in all guests have come to expect. Living area, bedroom with storage space, private bathroom, home office facilities and kitchenette - they're all here, and yet nothing about rooms is cramped or cluttered.

A compact bedroom area (separated from the rest of the studio by an elegant sliding partition) comes with generous wardrobe with full-length mirror and safety deposit box, deep cabinets for storage and, of course, comfy double bed. There's also a diminutive but well-stocked kitchenette; its gleaming arsenal of utensils perfect for knocking up a late-night snack or whipping up a culinary storm for visiting friends. Hats off and a big thank you to the designers for the adjustable reading lights - a refreshing and rare feature that is (surprisingly and conspicuously) missing in many upmarket hotels.

The bathrooms were designed with an equally modern approach; clinical, spacious and luxurious with a separate bath tub and shower cubicle, telephone handset and all the normal trimmings (except for a bidet or related facilities).

There certainly was no shortcomings at breakfast; a sumptuous affair served at Caf- de Nimes with its French Mediterranean accents, one of two world-class restaurants. The other, Bonbon, is a deluxe delicatessen - the ideal place to savour some gourmet delights like pastries, imported cheeses, goose liver terrine and caviar. Two bars, Aziza and Petrus, offer the ideal setting to enjoy delicious tropical cocktails.

During the day, Petrus doubles as a business lounge, and becomes a lively nightspot from 19:30 onwards with music provided by the hotel's resident band. Throughout these avenues and public areas, the latest decor trends are mirrored and wireless Internet is available.

What the compact Fitness Centre lacks in size is made up by an impressive collection of state-of-the-art exercise equipment. Personal trainers are knowledgeable and a feast for the eyes - just the kind of motivation required to start peddling vigorously on that space-aged-looking exercise bike.

The swimming pool somewhat resembles a theme park pool with fun, over-the-top design and architectural features; its inviting azure water offering a very tempting seduction to make a splash.

Save time and money, minimise stress, sweat less! The Key naturally appeals to businessmen and urbane travellers, but this ability means it should also satisfy intrepid visitors who want to explore the Bangkok beyond impersonal glass and steel skyscrapers, especially those sites within reach of BTS and MRT routes. Another big attraction is free wireless Internet throughout the property.

The six-storey corner building contains a mere 34 sleekly styled rooms. The Key's very cool and contemporary lobby - with its cream shiny surfaces, plump settee and plasma screen TV - provides a hint as to just how sleekly-styled they are. Head up in the lift, past corridors lined with vibrant 'The Key' theme modern art, and you discover three types: Gold (32 square metres), Platinum (40 square metres) and Master (60 square metres, one is 72 square metres).

They're not the first thing you encounter upstairs at The Key, they're the only thing (conspicuous by their absence is a pool, a gym and, until January 2008 at least, an in-house restaurant or bar). However this disappointment is, as long as you can live without such frills, made up for by the joy of crisp, streamlined living spaces that strike a perfect balance between hotel design theory (minimalism and functionalism seem to reign here) and practice (they're charismatic and comfortable).

For starters, each is thoughtfully laid out and looks great. While aesthetically homogenous, it's clear the designers have been far more considered than many in their use of textures and materials. Cream walls and light wood flooring and furnishings define the decorative palette; while splashes of dark marble and teak (tables, lampshades etc), chic beige sofas and exotic cushions paint in the detail.

Large windows, wind-down shutters and creative lighting design (recessed spot-lights and lamps) makes it easy to bring out the best in them. Most importantly, they are livable and feel great - more like fashionable long-stay homes than dull, functional boxes designed merely for the comfort of strangers (in fact five of the 39 rooms are exactly that, on long term lease).

The compact Gold Rooms (essentially studios) offer great value but may feel a tad too compact for all but the most intimate or tidy couple. They do, however, sport identical facilities to the roomy Platinum and Master rooms, only some things are downsized. All have double beds with velveteen cotton duvets, super comfy arm chair or settees, cupboards, 29" flat screen TVs, DVD player, in-room safe, dining table and a mini-kitchenette (large fridge freezer, microwave, kettle, crockery and cutlery). Bathrooms are spacious, featuring a bathtub with shower and ever-so chic matt and gloss grey tiling against black marble. Currently served in-room (until the opening of the restaurant in January 2008), the breakfast is simple but not Spartan: fresh fruit, cereal, toast with fried egg.

Views are not a strong point. However, sitting on your plush sofa while surfing the Internet, or popping around the corner in minutes to pick up a designer shirt, or knocking up a snack, is. Somewhat ironically for a place called The Key, there is no key - instead guests receive a plastic card that slips in your wallet alongside your business cards and credit card. So, a place that's hi-tech as well as high comfort (but not high cost) - The Key has unlocked many of the secrets to a hotel's success.

The Westin Grande Sukhumvit Bangkok is, simply put, rather grand. Wrought in timeless contemporary style and slap bang beside Sukhumvit's Skytrain and underground (Asok and Sukhumvit station), this 25-storey hotel offers a lot of five-star bang for your baht.

Stepping past the ground floor's ultra-modern Zen water feature and into the 7th floor lobby, with its splintered colour-morphing glass sculpture and long vistas of gleaming marble, is to be transported into a refined, executive-friendly realm. Highlights of which include the demure earth tones of the 362 rooms and the heady pale-cream romance of the bohemian Vareena Spa. Oh, and the location.

All but the most zealous temple devotee will find it sublime. Shopping, business, transport, dining - few are as practically placed. The Queen Sirikit Convention Centre is ten minutes away by car, and a Robinson's department store next door. There's no excuse to be a hotel hermit. Those that are, though, discover a big city hotel obsessed with small details. Namely a long list of signature products and services, most with gimmicky titles like 'Westin One Call' and 'Westin Service Express'. In fact most are not gimmicks, rather ingenious innovations to make you're stay at the Westin that much richer.

Like the fittingly titled 'Heavenly Bed', with its crisp Egyptian cottons and duvet so downy you feel like you're slumbering on a king-size fluffy cloud (many guests buy one for home). Or 'RunWESTIN' (a scenic three-mile group jog in nearby Benjakitti Park), 'Westin Kids Club' (fun activities, amenities and service for under 13s) and 'Unwind' (an evening piano bar ritual during which executives enjoy complimentary munchies and a free five-minute head massage to a backdrop of live music, dimmed lighting and scented candles). Westin Grande Sukhumvit is part of a global brand that has been fine-tuning its game since starting out in the 1930's - and it shows.

Each of the 362 guestrooms is darkly plush with a thin veneer of exoticism. Earth tones, vivacious contemporary furnishings and Thai fabrics set the mood. All come with executive work corners with glass top desk, bedside control panels, an iron and ironing board, high-speed Internet access (ask at reception for prices), satellite and on-demand movie channels.

In 42 square metre 'Deluxe Rooms' the most striking features are the gold velvet chaise longue, taupe fabric walls and curtains, spiral Art Deco lamp, vibrant modern art, and aforementioned 'Heavenly Bed'. Overall, pretty darn swanky. Bathrooms are surprisingly sumptuous, with glossy silver tiles, Art Deco-style dark marble sinks, and seperate bath tub and walk-in shower. Branded jojoba oil toiletries, slippers and a kimono-style robe provide the pampering.

The 31 suites have similar d-cor, but are 70 square metres and have a living room and bedroom. And for those who covet exclusivity, there are three Westin Executive Club floors offering 86 Executive Deluxe rooms and 11 Executive Suites. Both are the same size and layout as Deluxes and Suites, only guests enjoy reams of complimentary benefits: use of the elegant mocha-toned Executive Lounge (complimentary wireless Internet, snacks, and tea or coffee), express service laundry, free local calls and late check-out, among others. There's even, for those self-important moments, a butler on hand (though you have to share him) and a ravishing Presidential Suite with luxuriant settees and a dining room.

Being billed as Bangkok's first boutique hotel is no easy reputation to live up to. For starters, The Davis Hotel Bangkok is much bigger in terms of the number of rooms one would expect from a typical boutique hotel (237 guestrooms and ten Thai villas). When it opened in July 2003, it set new style parameters, and it wasn't long before others followed suit. Yet, four years on, and with new boutique contenders emerging fast and furious on the Bangkok hotel scene, The Davis still exemplifies the very essence of what a boutique hotel is all about - a unique hospitality experience that has, well, that little something extra which only the French have a word for: "panache".

Down Sukhumvit Road Soi 24, the imposing European-style curved Corner Wing is the first sign that you've arrived somewhere that's decidedly different. Two mythical Asian lions cast in concrete silently hold guard on either side of the entrance, while an antique Victorian street clock on a decorative cast-iron pole is juxtaposed to one side on the neatly brick-paved surface.

Tucked in next to the Corner Wing is Camp Davis, a two-storey retail complex, and passing that brings you to the Main Wing with its chic, clinical-looking contemporary lobby. You've arrived at a 'different experience'. So different, in fact, that you can change rooms for 60 consecutive nights without encountering the same interior twice.

A gripe some people would have with its location is that it's a good 15-minute hike to Sukhumvit Road where the popular Emporium mall and Phrom Phong Skytrain (BTS) station can be found. The hotel does offer a complimentary tuk-tuk shuttle service, but with only six seats and a limiting schedule on the half-hour, it's best to book your seat(s) with the concierge desk in advance.

On the upside, taxis are plentiful and cheap, and this 'soi' (street) off Sukhumvit has a life all of its own - far removed from the traffic-clogged main road with its pavement vendors, tourist touts and customary tailor shops. Besides, this is the type of hotel selected for its very special flair.

Inside Camp Davis are several restaurants (Thai and international), a Starbucks, a dental clinic, nail spa and beauty salon, ice cream shop and a few gift shops. The immediate vicinity has even more offerings: a number of authentic local eating experiences, a few massage shops (not of the happy-ending genre), a spa, a modern Tops supermarket, more coffee shops, a DVD hire outlet, pet shop, some boutique shops, an Internet shop, laundry and even a chocolatier - all adding to a charming neighbourhood feel.

Back at the hotel, there's even more to explore beyond Camp Davis, and the adjoining Corner and Main Wings, which are seven and nine storeys, respectively. At the back of the hotel lies the 'pi-ce de r-sistance', ten exquisite two- and three-bedroom Thai villas set in an idyllic garden, and ranging in size from 164 to 250 square metres.

With meticulous attention to comfort and design detail to keep the style authentic, the villas present an unprecedented level of luxury. Textured wooden walls, sumptuous silk touches and elegant furniture are off-set against the graceful arc of the ceiling, creating a wonderfully soothing space to sleep, eat, dream, relax and live.

Perfectly complementing the exquisite interiors are hi-tech trimmings like a data port for broadband Internet connectivity, a fax line, satellite (flat screen) TV, DVD/CD player, a fully-equipped kitchenette, and a bathroom with separate shower and tub where you'd want to spend much more time in than usual.

The same design and comfort philosophy is extended through all rooms and suits of the Corner and Luxury Wings, with a style and configuration that suits every taste. In the Main Wing, choices include Superior, Design and Deluxe Rooms (all 42 square metres, the 'differentiator' being the interior style), as well as one-bedroom Junior, Davis and Deluxe Suites (80 square metres and, again, decked out in different interiors) with separate lounge area and fully-equipped kitchenettes.

Executive Suites have two bedrooms in a spacious 130-square metre space. The Davis Suite here comes highly recommended with its four-poster bed, lots of dark woodwork in the lounge area, and beautifully decorated with ornamental Thai arts and crafts - yet oozing a contemporary mood. The A-shape ceiling creates a particularly unusual but pleasant feeling of added space.

The Studio Room in the Corner Wing (33 square metres) has what would be for some a very 'sexy' feature. A large window provides a full-on view either into the bathroom or from, but a curtain can be drawn for those who prefer bathroom privacy. The Premier Room offers a roomier option at 55 square metres, and weighing in even bigger are The Diplomat and Emperor Suites (both 100 square metres), and the Ambassador Suite (110 square metres). All the suites have Jacuzzis.

In-room features throughout are the same as that found in the villas (except the additional add-ons mentioned previously), but the varying interior styles of the different accommodations defy clear definition. It's distinctly Thai, but also modern. It's warm and cosy, yet also positively 'cool'.

The outdoor rooftop pool on the ninth floor of the Main Wing is not particularly big, with only a limiting number of deck chairs around. Claim yours early enough if lounging around the pool is on the agenda. The rooftop is a wonderfully relaxing area though, with lots of greenery, good views, a Pool Bar, and also where you'll find the well-equipped Spa & Fitness Centre.

There's a separate outdoor pool for use of guests staying at the villas, but note that guests staying in the Corner Wing have to walk the few minutes or so between that and the Main Wing, passing Camp Davis.

The Davis Hotel Bangkok is, understandably, very popular with business travellers. Rooms and suites are perfectly equipped for their needs, and the second floor Business Centre has all the facilities conducive to clinching that important business deal: impressive meeting rooms, wireless Internet, secretarial support, fax, photocopy and courier services. There's also wireless Internet in all lobby areas (not free though).

Guests should never have to leave the hotel to eat or be amused, and Gallery Cafe and Club 88 make sure of that. A delectable (and very affordable) continental and Asian buffet spread is a tempting option at Gallery Caf- for lunch or dinner, while an equally impressive breakfast buffet is laid on. Club 88 is a lively nighttime bar venue with Filipino entertainers crooning, shaking and tapping to the tunes of hits from the 80's and 90's - and the odd guest joining in the fun at times.

S15 Sukhumvit Hotel

From outside, it's easy to mistake S15 Sukhumvit Hotel for an upmarket interior store. Its name and the exterior signage are as subtle as it is inconspicuous, while large window panes offer glimpses of a suave-looking lobby that could easily be perceived as a showroom of the latest decor trends. Step inside, and you're welcomed to an intimate and 'good taste' hospitality experience.

The hotel's name is derived from its location on the corner of Sukhumvit Road's Soi 15. If you didn't know, this puts you in the heart of it all. Steps away are where the Skytrain and underground meet (BTS Asok and MRT Sukhumvit stations, respectively), and among established neighbours count several top city hotels. Nightlife, shopping malls, department stores, entertainment, and a multiple restaurant choices are all on its doorstep too - giving S15 a location that's not just convenient, but downright desirable.

To describe the decor throughout - from public areas to rooms and suites - is to make an inspired definition of all things considered hip and cool in designer circles. Chocolate and hazelnut browns contrasted against muted earth tones of light-coloured granite and marble, glass, mirror and reflective sheet metal. Natural materials like leather and a host of warm fabrics interplay with Italian light fittings, abundantly used to create dramatic visual imagery to savour. Like the sculptures that feature so prominently (one even in every room), which the owner also sourced from foreign soil.

The massive outsized black-and-white photographic images of moments and places uniquely Thai are his own work though, offset in heavy dark wooden frames. If this 'definition' doesn't say it, think stylish, chic and simply sensational - the kind of interiors people take photographs of to recreate. I guess it helps to also own one of Thailand's leading interior chains. What is evident is that S15 is a work of passion; the culmination of extraordinary taste, design vision and years of experience in the industry.

At the risk of sounding biased (and too bowled over by the fabulous interior), this is probably a good time to mention that S15 doesn't have a pool. Nope. But that's more or less the only negative. As expected, hi-tech trimmings echoes the contemporary design credo. Free Wi-Fi Internet throughout the hotel. Massive plasma television screens in every room. DVD machines and iPod docking stations (the latter in S15 Suites only). A well-equipped Business Centre.

A spa sanctuary and fitness facilities up on the seventh floor. Mezzanine Caf- on the second level serves a variety of local and international cuisine, doubling up as a coffee shop between meal times. A beverage service is offered in the Lobby Lounge. Except for making a splash, every need or whim is pretty much catered for. Friendly and attentive service perfectly complements the tangible offerings.

Thankfully, the days of hotel rooms being merely functional square boxes are long gone. In recognising this, the rooms and suites at S15 have been designed with a totally out-of-the-box philosophy, offering interesting shapes, sizes and configurations that have resulted in living spaces with conveniences and little treats that are a pleasure to spend time in - echoing the hotel's design style, features and fittings.

There are 72 rooms in the seven-storey building (40 S15 Deluxe Rooms, 23 S15 Junior Suites, and nine S15 Suites) that range in size from 30 square metres to a roomy 50 square metres. Bathrooms are luxurious marble-cladded enclaves with bathtubs and separate rain showers, beds covered with sumptuous linen, feather down duvets and a choice of pillows.

All the other expected little extras are there too: electronic safes, tea- and coffee-making facilities, ample wardrobe space, well-stocked minibar, IDD phone with voicemail and the like.

The real pleasure lies in the knowledge that the hustle and bustle of Sukhumvit Road is right outside the thick drapes and dark-stained shutters - yet, inside, this stylish sanctuary of good taste is a serene and quiet space to linger and relax. The S15 Deluxe Rooms are available in twin bed or king-size options, while Junior Suites impress with the innovative use of space.

You may go to sleep and wake up to the sound of mercantile commotion, but for many the views will be worth it. The 51 Superior Rooms (25 square metres), in contrast, are intimate - cosy, less bright and with much smaller bathrooms. They are, however, no less ravishing to the eye. Nor are they deprived of the highlight - a mock-antique four-poster wood bed that, despite being ornate and delicate, is very comfortable - or wood framed mirrors, shower, raised sink, antique towel rails, cupboards and a kitschy birdcage that looks like a prop lifted straight out of Fu Manchu. The overall effect is dream-like and likely to inspire flights of fancy.

No kowtowing servants are on hand to answer your every beck and call, but Shanghai Inn's helpful receptionists and modern amenities ensure you never feel shunned. Slip into the Chinese slippers and dressing gown, or enjoy the satellite TV, fridge, mini-bar, and Chinese tea set with kettle. There's an electronic safe and hairdryer but most impressive of all trappings is the complimentary wireless Internet in every room - a feature that still eludes the quarters of most five-star hotels.

There is also a small reading area with library and Internet facilities for those without laptops. And, when feeling hurried or harried by Chinatown's relentless pace, the Yin-Yang Spa - with 22 beds for body massages and 30 seats for foot massages - is the perfect tonic. The first thing that struck me about my Horizon Club suite is its spaciousness. The elegant decor is unpretentious and welcoming. As everywhere else in the hotel, exquisite flowers featured even in the bathroom. The peaceful ambiance of the suite formed a stark contrast to activities on the river below; from barges burdened with heavy loads to tailboats and ferries transporting people about.The only priority at the time was to indicate the pillows of my choice on the 'Pillow Menu'.

The choices varied from anti-snore, bolster and flat feather to buckwheat and foam. And I believe the Shangri-La will soon be the first hotel chain in the world to introduce a 'Scent Menu' too. Guests will be able to choose from combinations of lemon, peppermint, ginger, geranium, orange, lavender, bergamot, rose, jasmine, rosewood, grapefruit and cinnamon to "uplift, balance and sooth" while they are having sweet dreams.

As night falls, the riverside area undergoes a metamorphosis. The sky turns red with clusters of pink hues, as buildings light up almost on cue. Why is it that nowhere else in Bangkok sunsets seem as spectacular and dramatic than at the riverside? It was time to get ready for a dinner cruise on The Horizon, the Shangri-La's luxury, two-deck boat, a fitting ending to a perfect day.

On its delightful two-hour cruise along the river, the Horizon passes many of the city's famous landmarks like the Temple of Dawn, The Grand Palace and Temple of the Reclining Buddha, historical buildings, monuments and local markets buzzing with activity.

The difficult part is to take in the sights while enjoying the scrumptious international and Thai buffet. My personal favorite was the snow fish, masterly prepared with a white wine and cream sauce, elevating my tastebuds to culinary heaven.
