Pullman Bangkok King Power

The five-star Pullman Bangkok King Power is directly connected to the King Power Duty Free Mall, with boutique-style shopping that mirrors its Suvarnabhumi Departure Hall namesake - complete with duty-free benefits for guests to enjoy.

Best described as sterile and uncluttered minimalism - the work of renowned local firms Architects 49 Ltd and Interior Architects 49 Ltd - it emphasizes the luxury of space, with ceilings in public areas reaching up to dizzying heights and massive windows making for a symphony of glass and steel in disciplined, geometric lines.

Scattered throughout and perfectly juxtaposed are artworks and sculptures in various media by established Thai artists. The exquisite wooden carving above the front desk in the lobby, for example, creates a startling contrast to gleaming modern finishes.

It's the kind of hotel that goes out of its way to anticipate the needs of all its guests - with jovial service, unique room benefits (see below) and facilities that are downright thoughtful.

Managed by the Accor stable of hotel properties, Pullman Bangkok King Power rings in the arrival of this new-age hotel brand in Asia, poised to meet the needs and aspirations of especially the corporate and business travel sectors.

Its appeal, however, is much wider. With its cool design aesthetics, hi-tech advancements and super-efficiency it speaks the same language of a modern urban clientele - leisure travellers seeking an extension of the lifestyle comforts they are accustomed to when they're away from home.

A ten-minute walk from the hotel or short ride with the complimentary shuttle service (until 21:00) is Victory Skytrain (BTS) station and the Century Plaza Mall. Hop on the BTS here and three stops away is Siam station (MBK, Siam Paragon and the interchange with the Silom line), as well as all the city's most popular shopping, nightlife and dining areas further along the Sukhumvit line.

In the opposite direction, four stops away, is Mo Chit station. Walking distance from here is the famous Chatuchak Weekend Market. Two entry points for the expressway are close by too, making the hotel easily accessible to both airports. The immediate area is littered with local experiences like small shops, eateries and street food, while the popular Pratunam wholesale shopping area can be easily reached in under ten minutes on foot. A short taxi ride will take you to Southeast Asia's largest lifestyle mall, CentralWorld.

There are 386 rooms in total, spread out over the 22-storey Glass Tower and six floors of the Garden Wing, in four variations: Superior (100), Deluxe (204), Executive (52) and Suite (29). The Garden Wing is home to the Suites and some Deluxe rooms, with the remainder of rooms located in the Glass Tower. All rooms measure 32 square metres and Suites are 64 square metres.

Replacing the clinical and contemporary starkness of public areas, rooms exude a warm and cheerful coziness in a delightful and modern style. Marbled bathrooms have a separate bathtub and shower room with rain shower head. A unique (and useful) feature is the cupboard that opens on two sides - both in the room and bathroom. Inside the cupboard - apart from the expected - is also an iron and ironing board.

From the bathroom, a panel slides half-way open to offer a peek into the room - or vice-versa (eliminating the claustrophobia factor that often comes with smaller, confined and windowless spaces).

Now, 32 square metres is a modest room size but, considering how well these rooms have been designed, they appear bigger. In-room facilities include interactive flat-screen TVs offering satellite programmes and fast Internet access (wireless keyboard provided), and an iPod docking station.

The work station is of ample size, the chair ergonomically designed. A settee and coffee table make for a cosy corner to read the paper or enjoy the chocolates and fruit salad served in a hollowed-out pineapple that come courtesy with turn-down. The differences between Superior, Deluxe and Executive rooms are some variations in the interior decor but, essentially, benefits that come with the basic room rate.

Eastin Hotel Makkasan

It's still near shopping-mad Petchaburi Road and an expressway that gives easy access to the airport. It's still just minutes drive from the city's Skytrain (BTS Phayathai). And, this 23-storey high-rise is still encircled by a deliciously manic mix of street life and no-frills cuisine.

Yet, much has changed at the Eastin Hotel Makkasan. Seven months of top-to-bottom refurbishment have brought to pass an altogether chicer, cooler and classier hotel. Sleek looks and subtle Eastern accents now combine with a service-focused mindset, making for a contemporary city hotel of considerable vim and vigor. Everything from the neo-Grecian columns of the driveway to the soft wood paneling and gleaming Italian marble of the lobby looks voguish and fresh.

Not that it's all sheen, no substance. A complimentary minibus service now ferries guests to top spots like Siam Square four times a day. And the formally dressed staff come as polished as the floors. "Let me take your bags," implores a doorman, guiding you to the smiles of the reception desk. Check-in is brisk, giving you only just enough time to glance at a skyline that, with a snaking concrete expressway at its centre, is pure Bangkok. Afterwards a complimentary fruit punch lingers, courteously, under your nose, and a staff member beckons you into the lobby bar.

Here - amidst rich earth tone upholstery, dark wood tables and abstract Oriental sculptures - guests surrender the senses to a Zen-inspired realm featuring divine cuisine, a holistic spa, a serene swimming pool and more. Everything at the Eastin now reeks of refinement and class...

Top of the pile are the 130 rooms in three different styles: Superior, Deluxe or Executive Deluxe (280 will be up and running by May 2008).

Although modestly sized (they range from 32 square metres to 35) each is decorated luxuriantly, in sleek ultra-modern style. Their faintly masculine gold, cream and black colour schemes come courtesy of soft cream walls, gold fabric furniture and metallic paint paneling, dark teak fixtures and furnishings, and striped three-tone carpets.

Each also has a delicious white cotton duvet and plump pillows, not to mention a super-comfy bed. Long wooden surfaces with lamp and swivel chair offer plenty of space for laptops and paperwork. And large windows allow daylight to flood in dawn till dusk, when soft art-deco lamps and recessed lighting take over. Bathrooms are exceptional. Gold gilt mirrors, shiny tiling, snazzy washbasins, trendy blue bathrobes and bespoke 'Eastin' toiletries rendering them chic and indulgent.

There isn't much to distinguish rooms, merely small deviations in size, views, layout and accoutrements. However, all come with a host of standard features: soundproof windows with burgundy silk curtains, a bedside control panel (air-con, alarm and light switches), a computerized TV and movie system (ask at reception for movie prices), safety deposit boxes and high-speed Internet (150 baht for 15 minutes, 250 baht for 30 mins, 400 baht for an hour).

Only Superior Rooms though (the cheapest) get a LCD projector system that beams films or TV shows against a wall at the foot of the bed. This is, clearly, recompense for their unconventional layout (the bed sits in the middle of the room) and uninspiring views (most look onto an opposing building). Deluxe Rooms are the same size but have slightly more congenial studio layouts, a huge mirror above the bed, 21-inch flatscreen TVs and views onto spaghetti-junction, the nearby expressway. These are available in double or twin bed combos, the latter having a two-person sofa.

Considering the marginal price difference, we recommend you opt for the largest available room, a 35-square metre Executive Deluxe. Aside from just that little bit extra space, these have bigger mosaic bathrooms with separate walk-in shower/bathtub and a window partition.

Citadines Bangkok

Instead of opulent lobbies, fine dining and lists of frills you'll never get around to enjoying, Citadines serviced apartments on Sukhumvit Soi 16 - open since January 2007 - give guests privacy, flexible services and the freedom to stay anything from one night to a month (or more). With a focus on giving its mix of busy business execs and urbane travellers compelling prices, it also reserves the heaviest doses of style - not for the exteriors or entrances you briskly breeze past, but rather the chic, modern living spaces upstairs - where it really counts.

They've also found a great downtown location. Quietly situated in the pulsating heart of Bangkok on Sukhumvit's Soi 16, don't expect windows looking out on to landscaped gardens, or across classic city skylines. Instead, you've got the ability to dive in and out of the equally anarchic and endearing Sukhumvit at will, the chance to wallow in the unruly splendour of this famous area whilst also lapping up Citadines' unique take on city living.

Countless first-rate restaurants, bars and clubs are minutes walk away, as are hyperactive street markets, restless traffic and the constant interplay of Eastern traditions versus Western imports: all the things that gives Sukhumvit modern magnetism, and draw tourists here in droves. There's easy access to shopping and entertainment complexes like Robinsons department store, luxurious mall The Emporium, or the Queen Sirikti National Convention Centre. The nearby Benjasiri Park has all the stimulating greenery you could wish for. It's a great spot from which to steer a swift course through the rest of the city. Five minutes walk away is Asok Skytrain (BTS) station, as well as the Sukhumvit underground (MRT) station.

Spread over eight floors, Citadines has 79 rooms, each with a modest size that is greatly outweighed by its interior ambition and harmonious style. The 67 studios are 30 square metres, the 12 one-bedroom apartments 36 square metres, making these by no means the roomiest serviced apartments in town. However, bold architecture brings to mind the 'it's not size that matters, but what you do with it' adage. Designers have done a fantastic job with available space, combining chic minimalism with structural ingenuity to create interiors with a modern glow, spaces that pack in all guests have come to expect. Living area, bedroom with storage space, private bathroom, home office facilities and kitchenette - they're all here, and yet nothing about rooms is cramped or cluttered.

A compact bedroom area (separated from the rest of the studio by an elegant sliding partition) comes with generous wardrobe with full-length mirror and safety deposit box, deep cabinets for storage and, of course, comfy double bed. There's also a diminutive but well-stocked kitchenette; its gleaming arsenal of utensils perfect for knocking up a late-night snack or whipping up a culinary storm for visiting friends. In addition to electric kettle, coffee maker, microwave, grill oven, cooking hob, refrigerator and toaster, an efficient air extractor keeps wayward smells well away from the bedroom. Tucked away in the cupboards are a hairdryer, steam iron and ironing board.

Factor in things like daily cleaning services, or the sliding flatscreen TV and DVD player that enables you to watch the latest new or listen to music in either living area or bedroom, and they make perfect and practical abodes for single travellers, busy business execs, or couples. If you'd like a bit more space, for only slightly more you can upgrade to a one-bedroom apartment with a more ample 36 square metres. These come with private bedroom, bath and shower, separate toilet and enclosed kitchen. If with little people or friends in toe there's the option of adding an extra bed in both types of room (although this will cost extra).

Citadines embraces stylish simplicity; the focus on giving guests a modern living space above extras or facilities you pay for but never use. That said, a small but inspiring array of external features are by no means wasted. The stylish 'City Xpress' restaurant on the second floor, for example, is where to receive your tasty continental breakfast (included). As if echoing the intelligent design of the rooms, this also functions as convenience store (drinks, basic toiletriesn and snacks) and sports TV lounge. Up on the eighth floor is a small fitness room, and in the lobby a business corner with wireless internet (costs extra). What really dazzles in this alluringly modern establishment, however, is the seriously chic style and spaces found up in the brand new rooms. That, and ease of access to brilliantly boisterous downtown Bangkok.

President Solitaire Bangkok

Its great downtown location on Sukhumvit Soi 11 is just an added bonus. President Solitaire has raised the bar far beyond the home-away from-home concept too, with 134 lavishly-appointed luxury suites that are quite unlike your average serviced apartment. Factor in the attentive service, long list of in-room features - including 42-inch Plasma TV and complimentary wireless Internet - and excellent recreational facilities like the renowned Ananda Spa, and it begins to sound like something different entirely. In essence, it resembles a place any aspiring king or queen, and accompanying entourage, would simply love to call their castle...

Nestled at the quiet end of Soi 11, it's well situated, both away from the hustle and bustle of Sukhumvit Road and yet very close to it. The limitless shopping, dining and entertainment options provided in this part of town is but a 10-minute stroll away, as is the ability to navigate the city using its quickest and undoubtedly coolest mode of transport, the Skytrain (BTS, Nana station).

Up in the suites, spacious comfort combined with homely mod cons and frills, make an alien space seem instantly familiar and cosy. Sizes range from the ample 43-square metre Executive Suite all the way up to the palatial 80-square metre Solitaire Suite, with its separate living area and bedroom. What strikes most forcefully, however, and stretches from the lobby up into each of the grandly furnished rooms, is the President Solitaire's consistently elegant aesthetic and wonderfully luxurious d-cor.

Motifs seen in the spacious lobby like the use of marble, traditional Thai paintings, plush rugs and, moreover, a decidedly classical ambiance, carry through into each of the 134 suites. Each, for example, has its own marble foyer - a feature that lends a welcome dash of grandiose homeliness - as well as its own large marble-lined bathroom (upper range suites come with private jacuzzi).

Furnishings are simple, uncluttered and all the while elegant, allowing guests ample room to enjoy their surroundings without being overawed by them, much as they would expect at home. Sitting cozily amongst the rich wood paneling, cream walls, warm lighting and hard-wood flooring that defines the suites' classical ambiance, is stately furniture including antique writing desks, plump sofas, coffee tables and luxurious rugs. Scattered liberally here and there also are Thai undertones, the odd piece of distressed furniture or artwork depicting scenes from ancient mythology and Buddhist iconography. In the Solitaire and Platinum Suites, the four-poster king-size beds are agreeably snug, but the plump linen-lined mattresses found in all should have the most hardened of insomniacs sleeping soundly (the choice of six pillows should help aid blissful slumbers) .

As impressive as the classical ambiance is the way modern trappings crop up, helping ensure guests receive the ultimate in comfort and contentment. While on the face of it steadfastly traditional in design, rooms are resolutely modern, if not down-right innovative. Alongside typical hotel-type features like a minibar, free daily newspaper and complimentary maid service, come practical, homely ones like a fully-fitted kitchenette with refrigerator, microwave oven, electric hob, storage cabinets, as well as table and kitchen utensils. The Platinum Suite even comes with its own compact but cheerful dining area.

And then there are the hi-tech accoutrements that drag every residence gleefully into the 21st Century. Each comes with wireless internet, DVD player, 30-channel satellite television, electronic safe and a bedside control panel that gives you mastery over everything from lighting, temperature to your alarm call (yes, here you truly are the all-powerful king of your castle). And not forgetting the President Solitaire's strongest selling point: the huge 42-inch plasma screen TV that graces every room (and may well make it hard for you to leave yours).

Pleasures to be divulged from a stay here stretch far beyond the walls of your own individual realm. Located on the mezzanine floor, the fashionably elegant environs of the wood-struck The Dining Room, with its wide selection of Thai and international culinary bites, and where a complimentary buffet breakfast is served, is a great choice any time of day. On top of that, a 24-hour kitchen and room service means there's no reason for you to go hungry any time of night either. Also located on the mezzanine floor are the inviting sandstone swimming pool, tranquil lounging deck and fully equipped gymnasium, where you can enjoy the underwater music, soak up some sun or flex your muscles with guidance from the resident personal trainer.

Grand President Bangkok

With so many choices of accommodation all over the city, it often becomes a real burden to select the perfect place to stay. Seasoned visitors tend to have their preferences but, especially for a first-time visitor, it can be quite a daunting task. One of the first factors that come into play when choosing where to stay is, of course, location. Good location ensures convenience - and that's what Grand President Executive Serviced Apartments is all about...

It's a typical busy afternoon on Sukhumvit Road. The traffic seems to have come to a complete standstill while people on the sidewalks are either rushing home or stopping for a bite at one of Nana's many food stalls. Branching off the main road is the less hectic Soi 11, where some of the city's finest restaurants, clubs (the likes of Q Bar and Bed Supperclub), hotels, and serviced apartments are located. Halfway down the 'soi' (street), about five minutes' walk from the BTS station (Nana), stands the imposing Grand President Executive Serviced Apartments - a convenient hideaway from all the downtown commotion, yet in close proximity to the city's best shopping, dining, and entertainment venues.

There are three towers, featuring 437 well-appointed and spacious studios and suites - ranging from one to three bedrooms. Facing each other are Towers I and II. Tower I is where all the hotel formalities such as checking in and out are conducted. The main lobby is as imposing as it gets - a large and clinical space that is strikingly lit - and manned by the kind of service-is-our-pleasure staff that is a pleasure (to deal with), indeed. Exclusive suites like the Executive Studio, Garden Suite, Royal Suite, Grand Suite and Pavilion Suite are an ideal choice for business travellers, families, and those simply looking for a higher level of comfort and convenience. Diagonally located opposite these towers, Tower III offers a more compact alternative, perfect for leisure travellers and couples, with a selection of the Jade Studio, Topaz Studio, Pearl Suite and Diamond Suite. Towers I and II also each feature a swimming pool on large outdoor decks, as well as fully-equipped fitness centres, sauna and steam room facilities.

The Grand President Executive Apartments effortlessly merge homely comforts with the finest quality hospitality facilities and services. Suites and studios are meticulously decorated and fitted out with an emphasis on taste and functionality. The spaciousness of the recently-refurbished Royal Suite in Tower II impresses with is stylish living room. An alcove provides for a kitchenette, fully equipped with a microwave oven, hot plate, cooking and eating utensils, a full-size refrigerator and washing machine - basically all the things that make life a lot easier.

Most impressive too is the entertainment system which includes a 32" LCD TV, complete with over 30 cable channels, a DVD player, mini home theatre, in-house movies, and a snug leather settee to match. Busy executives will love the work desk at the far end of the room with a direct-line cordless phone and WIFI Internet access. As if this wasn't enough, The Grand President Executive Apartments also offer a full-function Business Centre and meeting rooms for keeping up with all your business affairs.

The Grand President's on-site convenience store is another great feature, and stocks everything from everyday essentials to local and international newspapers, as well as drinks and snacks.

Majestic Grande Bangkok

Tucked away quietly in Soi 2 just off bustling Sukhumvit Road, halfway between Ploencit and Nana Skytrain (BTS) stations, The Majestic Grande has great location working in its favour too. Sukhumvit Road's concoction of shopping, nightlife and entertainment offerings are close enough to reach in a jiffy.

To be greeted on arrival with a big, broad smile and casual manner, is as refreshing as the freshly-squeezed orange juice offered at the check-in counter. Here, too, the service is swift and efficient, with an approach that can be called casual courteousness rather than formal politeness.
The warm earthtones and abundant use of dark wood and natural materials in the lobby and Lobby Lounge - where drinks, snacks and cakes are served throughout the day (accompanied by live piano sounds at night) - makes for a cosy ambiance. A perfect example of good and functional design that complements and inspire, rather than intimidate or make a pretentious statement.

The same contemporary Thai-inspired d-cor are mirrored by the 251 spacious guest rooms and suites, which are sumptuously furnished and equipped with absolute comfort in mind. The lavish use of tropical hardwood, rich fabrics, multi-coloured marble and granite in the luxurious bathrooms, combined with hi-tech amenities and attention to the smallest detail, makes it the kind of hotel room that you wish you had more time to spend in.
It goes beyond just providing the basic comforts and requirements, by being a peaceful sanctuary rather than just a functional living space. Decent glimpses of the city skyline even greets me from the large window. Indeed, it's a great hotel room to spend leisurely time in, recuperating and catching your breath before your next exploration of Bangkok's many attractions.

High-speed wireless Internet access? Check. In-room safe? Check. Bedside master control panel with sensor touch operation? Check. In fact, it's all there. From the 28 square meter (standard) Grande Superior room to the lavishly-appointed 240 square meter Majestic Grande Suite, the full squadron of little extras are at your beck and call.

Worth considering is an upgrade to the 35 square meter Grande Premier guest suites on the executive floor, which not only offers more space, but access to an Executive Lounge that overlooks a small balcony garden, and where complimentary refreshments and cocktails are served early evening. Other exclusive privileges include discounts on the impressive Business Centre facilities, and three hours of free high-speed Internet.

Flanked by the trendy Dine@7 restaurant and coffee shop on the one side and a modern gym on the other, the pool is equipped with waterfall showers, jacuzzi and whirlpool baths. On the same level are also steam room facilities and, to complete the wellness experience, Thai-style massage therapies are offered.

Grand Sukhumvit by Sofitel Bangkok

One of the latest additions to Bangkok's growing number of trendy, 'new age' establishments is the 36-storey Grand Sukhumvit by Sofitel; a successful fusion of classic hospitality values, hi-tech features and chic, contemporary d-cor trends.

Sukhumvit Road is littered with malls, shops, clubs, bars, entertainment choices and a never-ending list of Asian and International restaurants steadily establishing its status as one of Bangkok's prime and most popular areas. The skytrain (BTS) route along this bustling road makes all of its offerings easily accessible. It's also a gateway to the rest of the city and its other attractions, with an underground connection at Asoke. Tucked into Soi (street) 6, a 100-metre stroll from Nana BTS station, the stylish two towers of the Grand Sukhumvit by Sofitel can indeed boast a great location. Close enough to the 'action' - yet, removed from it too at a comfortable distance.

Consisting of 128 luxurious rooms and 239 fully equipped one- and two-bedroom apartments, the modern d-cor is striking and soothing at the same time. Dark earth tones are accentuated with and contrasted by muted colours, interesting textures and a feeling of warmth, comfort and 'home' created by scatter cushions, decorative ceramics and furnishings upholstered in rich textiles.

The interesting shapes and generous dimensions of all the rooms - moving away from the 'matchbox' genre - makes for a living space that feels more like an apartment than a hotel room. Indeed, guest rooms offer 'a 21st Century Thai experience', just like the promotional material says.

On the hi-tech front, guest rooms don't disappoint either. With large LCD screens offering a choice of satellite and cable channels, a broadband data port connection, IDD phone and user-friendly environment control features for lighting and air-conditioning, no expenses were spared in bringing guests the latest technological conveniences. Hats off and a big thank you to the designers for the adjustable reading lights - a refreshing and rare feature that is (surprisingly and conspicuously) missing in many upmarket hotels.

The bathrooms were designed with an equally modern approach; clinical, spacious and luxurious with a separate bath tub and shower cubicle, telephone handset and all the normal trimmings (except for a bidet or related facilities).

There certainly was no shortcomings at breakfast; a sumptuous affair served at Caf- de Nimes with its French Mediterranean accents, one of two world-class restaurants. The other, Bonbon, is a deluxe delicatessen - the ideal place to savour some gourmet delights like pastries, imported cheeses, goose liver terrine and caviar. Two bars, Aziza and Petrus, offer the ideal setting to enjoy delicious tropical cocktails.

During the day, Petrus doubles as a business lounge, and becomes a lively nightspot from 19:30 onwards with music provided by the hotel's resident band. Throughout these avenues and public areas, the latest decor trends are mirrored and wireless Internet is available.

What the compact Fitness Centre lacks in size is made up by an impressive collection of state-of-the-art exercise equipment. Personal trainers are knowledgeable and a feast for the eyes - just the kind of motivation required to start peddling vigorously on that space-aged-looking exercise bike.

The swimming pool somewhat resembles a theme park pool with fun, over-the-top design and architectural features; its inviting azure water offering a very tempting seduction to make a splash.

Overall, the Grand Sukhumvit by Sofitel is designed to please travelers with a taste for the contemporary; a comfortable, convenient and value-for-money retreat to let your hair down in between making the most of your stay in the Thai capital.

The Key Sukhumvit Bangkok

Which of Bangkok's many secrets are you looking to unlock? Is it the traditional (the temples, the markets, the canals) or the cosmopolitan (the nightclubs, the shopping malls, the restaurants)?

If the answer to all of them is yes, then try using 'The Key': an ultra-modern, mini boutique offering hip homely comforts alongside a downtown, travel-friendly location. Tucked away discreetly down a quiet sub-soi (street) on Sukhumvit Soi 19, it's a low on frills place that both locks you away from, and unlocks, the city. When inside you're free of city din and, when out, you're free to explore the city unimpeded.

That's mainly because here you're not chained to the roads. It takes only a few short steps - past the bustling modernism of convenience stores, department stores, bars, spas and restaurants - to reach Bangkok's Skytrain or underground, namely BTS Asok and MRT Sukhumvit stations.

These air-conditioned refuges whiz above and below the city's notorious traffic, liberating you from the need to use taxis, motorbikes and tuk-tuks or breathe their noxious fumes. Save time and money, minimise stress, sweat less! The Key naturally appeals to businessmen and urbane travellers, but this ability means it should also satisfy intrepid visitors who want to explore the Bangkok beyond impersonal glass and steel skyscrapers, especially those sites within reach of BTS and MRT routes. Another big attraction is free wireless Internet throughout the property.

The six-storey corner building contains a mere 34 sleekly styled rooms. The Key's very cool and contemporary lobby - with its cream shiny surfaces, plump settee and plasma screen TV - provides a hint as to just how sleekly-styled they are. Head up in the lift, past corridors lined with vibrant 'The Key' theme modern art, and you discover three types: Gold (32 square metres), Platinum (40 square metres) and Master (60 square metres, one is 72 square metres).

They're not the first thing you encounter upstairs at The Key, they're the only thing (conspicuous by their absence is a pool, a gym and, until January 2008 at least, an in-house restaurant or bar). However this disappointment is, as long as you can live without such frills, made up for by the joy of crisp, streamlined living spaces that strike a perfect balance between hotel design theory (minimalism and functionalism seem to reign here) and practice (they're charismatic and comfortable).

For starters, each is thoughtfully laid out and looks great. While aesthetically homogenous, it's clear the designers have been far more considered than many in their use of textures and materials. Cream walls and light wood flooring and furnishings define the decorative palette; while splashes of dark marble and teak (tables, lampshades etc), chic beige sofas and exotic cushions paint in the detail.

Large windows, wind-down shutters and creative lighting design (recessed spot-lights and lamps) makes it easy to bring out the best in them. Most importantly, they are livable and feel great - more like fashionable long-stay homes than dull, functional boxes designed merely for the comfort of strangers (in fact five of the 39 rooms are exactly that, on long term lease).

The compact Gold Rooms (essentially studios) offer great value but may feel a tad too compact for all but the most intimate or tidy couple. They do, however, sport identical facilities to the roomy Platinum and Master rooms, only some things are downsized. All have double beds with velveteen cotton duvets, super comfy arm chair or settees, cupboards, 29" flat screen TVs, DVD player, in-room safe, dining table and a mini-kitchenette (large fridge freezer, microwave, kettle, crockery and cutlery). Bathrooms are spacious, featuring a bathtub with shower and ever-so chic matt and gloss grey tiling against black marble. Currently served in-room (until the opening of the restaurant in January 2008), the breakfast is simple but not Spartan: fresh fruit, cereal, toast with fried egg.

Views are not a strong point. However, sitting on your plush sofa while surfing the Internet, or popping around the corner in minutes to pick up a designer shirt, or knocking up a snack, is. Somewhat ironically for a place called The Key, there is no key - instead guests receive a plastic card that slips in your wallet alongside your business cards and credit card. So, a place that's hi-tech as well as high comfort (but not high cost) - The Key has unlocked many of the secrets to a hotel's success.

Westin Grande Sukhumvit Bangkok

Rating:

The Westin Grande Sukhumvit Bangkok is, simply put, rather grand. Wrought in timeless contemporary style and slap bang beside Sukhumvit's Skytrain and underground (Asok and Sukhumvit station), this 25-storey hotel offers a lot of five-star bang for your baht.

Stepping past the ground floor's ultra-modern Zen water feature and into the 7th floor lobby, with its splintered colour-morphing glass sculpture and long vistas of gleaming marble, is to be transported into a refined, executive-friendly realm. Highlights of which include the demure earth tones of the 362 rooms and the heady pale-cream romance of the bohemian Vareena Spa. Oh, and the location.
All but the most zealous temple devotee will find it sublime. Shopping, business, transport, dining - few are as practically placed. The Queen Sirikit Convention Centre is ten minutes away by car, and a Robinson's department store next door. There's no excuse to be a hotel hermit. Those that are, though, discover a big city hotel obsessed with small details. Namely a long list of signature products and services, most with gimmicky titles like 'Westin One Call' and 'Westin Service Express'. In fact most are not gimmicks, rather ingenious innovations to make you're stay at the Westin that much richer.

Like the fittingly titled 'Heavenly Bed', with its crisp Egyptian cottons and duvet so downy you feel like you're slumbering on a king-size fluffy cloud (many guests buy one for home). Or 'RunWESTIN' (a scenic three-mile group jog in nearby Benjakitti Park), 'Westin Kids Club' (fun activities, amenities and service for under 13s) and 'Unwind' (an evening piano bar ritual during which executives enjoy complimentary munchies and a free five-minute head massage to a backdrop of live music, dimmed lighting and scented candles). Westin Grande Sukhumvit is part of a global brand that has been fine-tuning its game since starting out in the 1930's - and it shows.

Each of the 362 guestrooms is darkly plush with a thin veneer of exoticism. Earth tones, vivacious contemporary furnishings and Thai fabrics set the mood. All come with executive work corners with glass top desk, bedside control panels, an iron and ironing board, high-speed Internet access (ask at reception for prices), satellite and on-demand movie channels.

In 42 square metre 'Deluxe Rooms' the most striking features are the gold velvet chaise longue, taupe fabric walls and curtains, spiral Art Deco lamp, vibrant modern art, and aforementioned 'Heavenly Bed'. Overall, pretty darn swanky. Bathrooms are surprisingly sumptuous, with glossy silver tiles, Art Deco-style dark marble sinks, and seperate bath tub and walk-in shower. Branded jojoba oil toiletries, slippers and a kimono-style robe provide the pampering.

The 31 suites have similar d-cor, but are 70 square metres and have a living room and bedroom. And for those who covet exclusivity, there are three Westin Executive Club floors offering 86 Executive Deluxe rooms and 11 Executive Suites. Both are the same size and layout as Deluxes and Suites, only guests enjoy reams of complimentary benefits: use of the elegant mocha-toned Executive Lounge (complimentary wireless Internet, snacks, and tea or coffee), express service laundry, free local calls and late check-out, among others. There's even, for those self-important moments, a butler on hand (though you have to share him) and a ravishing Presidential Suite with luxuriant settees and a dining room.

Sports enthusiast, spa junkie or all-hours workaholic - everyone's whim is catered for at the Westin. After pressing 'send' on that deal-closing fax in the Business Centre, or closing your annual speech in one of the many opulent conference halls, go sweat away stress in the sauna, steam-room or 24-hour gym (personal trainers, energizing sounds, Reebok-designed workouts/equipment). Then cool off with a few leisurely laps in the outdoor freeform pool, with its swim-up bar, sun loungers and skyscraper backdrop.

The Furama’s leisure facilities are located rooftop which is an ideal location to read your complimentary newspaper with a freshly brewed pot of coffee after or before working up a sweat in the hotel's fully-equipped gym.

The perfect conclusion is undoubtedly a relaxing soak in one of the Jacuzzi-fitted hydropools, before some much needed sun tanning time on the spacious sun-loungers.

The FuramaXclusive will not disappoint. From the accommodation perspective, the spacious, well-adorned and equipped rooms are faultless and perfect for long stays in Bangkok.
