Shangri-La Hotel Bangkok

The hotel's modern western decor is enhanced by the beauty and fine craftsmanship of Thai decorative motifs and artwork, found from the lobby to every guestroom and suite. Plush and posh - yet, inviting and in a soothing east-meets-west style.

The 25-storey Shangri-La Wing (670 rooms) and smaller, more exclusive Krungthep Wing (129 rooms) encircle the lush gardens, and serve as a perfect backdrop to the resort-like pool areas. Palm trees, flowering bougainvillea, orchids and birds of paradise complete this perfect picture.

The almost quarter of a mile (402 meters) stretch along the Chao Phraya River gives the Shangri-La the longest river frontage of any inner-city hotel, while it's also the only hotel in the area situated so close to a BTS Skytrain station (Saphan Thaksin).

Getting around to major tourist and shopping attractions is a breeze; a complimentary boat shuttle service is available every half hour to Rivercity with its antiques and collectables, as well as a hospitality minibus that makes regular rounds to Silom's bustling nightlife scene, and a few other daytime routes. Or choose from tailboats, rivertaxis, tuk-tuks and taxis. If traveling in style is your thing, a limousine or helicopter is just a phonecall away.

Facilities and amenities are endless, matched only by the impressive list of awards and accolades the hotel and its restaurants have collected over the past 20 years. But, the secret of the Shangri-La's fine reputation goes far beyond the crystal chandeliers, marble features, world-class spa and sought-after awards that has made it host to several high profile events like the APEC Summit in 2003, the Asean Summit and Thailand's H.M. Queen Sirikit's annual Birthday Charity Ball. Service is key. And the incredible attention to detail.

The first thing that struck me about my Horizon Club suite is its spaciousness. The elegant decor is unpretentious and welcoming. As everywhere else in the hotel, exquisite flowers featured even in the bathroom. Not surprisingly, it takes a dedicated team of ten florists and more than two million baht per month (roughly USD 50,000) to bring the beauty of Thailand's flora into every corner and corridor of the hotel. Heck, even a rainforest 'wall' has been recreated in the lobby - complete with falling water.

The peaceful ambiance of the suite formed a stark contrast to activities on the river below; from barges burdened with heavy loads to tailboats and ferries transporting people about. The only priority at the time was to indicate the pillows of my choice on the 'Pillow Menu'.

The choices varied from anti-snore, bolster and flat feather to buckwheat and foam. And I believe the Shangri-La will soon be the first hotel chain in the world to introduce a 'Scent Menu' too. Guests will be able to choose from combinations of lemon, peppermint, ginger, geranium, orange, lavender, bergamot, rose, jasmine, rosewood, grapefruit and cinnamon to "uplift, balance and sooth" while they are having sweet dreams.

As night falls, the riverside area undergoes a metamorphosis. The sky turns red with clusters of pink hues, as buildings light up almost on cue. Why is it that nowhere else in Bangkok sunsets seem as spectacular and dramatic than at the riverside? It was time to get ready for a dinner cruise on The Horizon, the Shangri-La's luxury, two-deck boat, a fitting ending to a perfect day.

On its delightful two-hour cruise along the river, the Horizon passes many of the city's famous landmarks like the Temple of Dawn, The Grand Palace and Temple of the Reclining Buddha, historical buildings, monuments and local markets buzzing with activity.

The difficult part is to take in the sights while enjoying the scrumptious international and Thai buffet. My personal favorite was the snow fish, masterly prepared with a white wine and cream sauce, elevating my tastebuds to culinary heaven.

To make the most of a stay at this fine hotel, the Horizon Club with its spacious rooms and suites on the 23rd, 24th and 25th floors of the Shangri-La Wing offers the kind of exclusivity and privileges that meet the needs of the most discerning leisure or business traveler - for just a little extra.

From access to the Horizon Club Lounge with a breakfast buffet in the morning, soft drinks throughout the day, canap-s and drinks late afternoon, to an around-the-clock concierge, meeting rooms, late check-out (18:00), and an express check-in and check-out service.

The Horizon Club suite was more than a hotel room; it was an experience. Guest relations staff take service levels a notch higher than the already impeccable standards maintained throughout the hotel, which can overall be described as unobtrusive, swift, attentive, pleasant, helpful and sincere.

The moment you enter through the doors of CHI - The Spa at Shangri-La, you enter a different world. The spacious 1,000 square meter spa, inspired by the architectural and design principles of a Tibetan temple, is a sanctuary of tranquility that indulges all the senses.

Dramatic, subdued lighting accentuates feature walls finished in split-face stone and exquisite artworks and antiques sourced from the Himalayan region. The smell of fragrant incense and aromatic oils wafts through the air. Colours are rich and finishes are understated and simple. The ambiance is one of sacred indulgence.

The CHI Spa experience is based on the ancient healing traditions and philosophies of China and the Himalayas. 'Chi' represents the universal life force that governs well-being and vitality. To maintain good health, it is believed that chi must flow freely within the body.

All the spa treatments (currently there are more than 35 to choose from) and the exclusive product range have been designed on the Chinese philosophy of the five elements, in which metal, water, wood, fire and earth are in balance with the positive yang and negative yin energy within the body.

Each spa experience takes place in one of nine, spacious private suites, featuring a spa-within-a-spa concept, complete with an infinity bath, herbal steam and shower, relaxation lounge and changing, toilet and vanity areas. The Garden Suite, the largest in Bangkok, features a garden with an infinity bath set in a lotus pond. All treatment rooms have sweeping river views too, and the lighting changes as part of the therapy sequence.

Prior to and after the massage, Tibetan singing bowls are used to balance one's energy aurally. The bowls are made to 'sing' when struck or rubbed around the outside of the rim using a wooden stick which, at various speeds and force, create a sustained ringing sound. The harmonics of Tibetan singing bowls, bells and symbols have been used for centuries to assist with meditation and healing.

Royal Orchid Sheraton Bangkok

Since it was established on the resort-like banks of the historical Chao Phraya River in 1983, the Royal Orchid Sheraton Hotel & Towers has been piling up awards as a rare breed of hotel that goes far beyond providing a place to rest your head in style. Welcome to an equally rare and royal experience.

Your taste buds are covered for traditional Royal Thai cuisine at Thara Thong, riverside dining at Thailand Tonight (BBQ buffet of Thai and international favourites, complete with a cultural show), a continental buffet (etc... On the River), or the delightful Giorgios, traditional Italian cuisine in a trendy, contemporary setting.

Other facilities include a modern and well-equipped fitness centre, sauna, jogging track and tennis court.

To crown the 'royal experience', the under ten minutes it takes to reach Saphan Taksin Pier (with a Skytrain station) in the complimentary shuttle boat is a charming experience - and makes the rest of the city easy to explore. Many famous historical riverside attractions, Chinatown and the delightful Old City are easy to reach too.

Whether you're a business or leisure traveller, travelling alone, with children, or looking for a romantic and luxurious experience to spoil yourself, your only regret would be checking out. This is a hotel that exemplifies an elegant tradition with gracious service and a modern outlook.

The Montien Hotel Bangkok

For the past 40 years, the Montien Hotel has been known amongst Bangkok’s business and leisure travellers for its excellent portrayal of traditional Thai hospitality. All 475 rooms and suites are adorned in traditional Thai style, including useful amenities.

Conveniently placed on Surawong Road, the Montien is surrounded by a number of nightlife venues due to its close proximity to the infamous Patpong and its eclectic Night Market– home to an abundance of counterfeit goods, amongst other things. While the business district, Silom, is just a few minutes walk from the hotel.

In Thai, the word ‘Montien’ means the royal residence. At first glance, the big white building's exterior might look a bit tired but once you step inside guests are struck by the grandiose lobby and its opulent Thai-style décor, fused with the exquisite attention to detail that Thailand is so renowned for. The grand winding staircase with its adjoining golden banisters instantly catches your eye.

With the high spirits of the traditionally dressed staff who efficiently assisted me through the check-in process, it’s was easy to see why Thailand hails itself as the ‘Land Of Smiles’. The Montien rooms still don’t feature keycards but remain with the ordinary door key attached to a unique bell-keychain which, thankfully, will open room's door regardless of whether it has been placed by your mobile phone or credit card.

Enjoying a prime location, the Montien is situated on Surawong Road running parallel to Silom Road. Approximately ten minutes walk from Sam Yan, Silom MRT and Sala Daeng BTS stations. While Silom, one of Bangkok’s business and night entertainment hubs can be easily accessed by foot through the Taniya and Patpong Streets.

A short distance from the area is the Chao Phraya River- just three stations away (Saphan Taksin BTS) while main shopping malls like Siam Paragon, Central World, Siam Discovery, Siam Centre, MBK, and Siam Square are only five minutes (National Stadium, Siam, and Chidlom BTS) via Skytrain.

The outdoor swimming pool on the third floor is a good spot for those who love splashing around or wishing to pick up a made-in-Bangkok tan. Millennium Hilton Bangkok

As soon as you set foot in the outsized atrium lobby with its 12-storey high ceiling and spectacular lighting features, you are struck by the hotel's ultra-modern minimalist elegance that offers a striking visual experience. The decor is chic, snazzy and cutting edge. The imposing 32-storey building - on the Chonburi banks of the Chao Phraya River - has been a familiar landmark in the city for several years now.

The Millennium Hilton has set a new benchmark with the high importance placed on global design trends. A third of the interior budget was spent on lighting only, calling on the expertise of celebrated New York lighting designer Tony Chi. The modernism decor has a strong regional flavour too, and a vague dash of Zen. These exceptional design features are not where the detail stops though...

The hotel's prime location in the heart of Bangkok's original temple precinct, covering a 50-metre wide river frontage, also means box-office views of the city and river from every window. For convenience, a check-in facility has been introduced at the Hilton's private reception in the easily-accessible River City complex, aptly named Hilton Crossings.

From here guests can take a short riverboat trip to the hotel; a trip that sets a charming mood for a stay next to this historical river that even today remains the life-blood of the city. A hospitality boat also offers transportation to and from Saphan Taksin Pier, a short walk from the same-named BTS station, from where the city's shopping and business districts - as well as many famous sights and attractions - are a breeze to reach.

Guest rooms (totaling 543) are fresh and contemporary, with accents of Thai culture reflected in golden lacquer, silk cladding and wooden panels. The open-plan bathrooms of Deluxe Plus River View rooms, Executive River View rooms and all suites are particularly fabulous with their sliding panel concept, and well worth an upgrade to.

Rooms are furthermore perfectly fitted out and equipped to meet every need of the modern-day, discerning traveler - from hi-speed Internet access to the 'magic' button on the telephone. The 'magic' phone feature - a Hilton innovation - brings all the hotel's add-on services to you at the press of a single button. Magic indeed.

To one side of the lobby stands a two-storey spa that resembles a contemporary Thai 'sala' (house), centred round a huge, centuries-old Banyan Tree. The spa provides an urban retreat from the bustle outside. And then there's the poolside area, dubbed 'The Beach', with its 20-metre infinity pool that seemingly drips over the edge of the building, real sea sand feature and beach chairs immersed in shallow, azure water. The fourth floor is also where the Health Club is located with its cardio-vascular facilities, saunas and aerobics room.

More treats await. Three Sixty is a fitting name for this top-floor bar-cum-lounge where live jazz music is a nightly feature. It's also the only indoor venue in Bangkok that offers unobstructed 360 degree vistas in a room that somewhat resembles a flying saucer. Night-time views are a spectacle to behold, with panoramic vistas that go on forever.

Dining and entertainment options abound; from Flow, an all-day culinary experience with live cooking stations, a contemporary Chinese restaurant called Yuan, to the award-winning London bar and club concept called Zeta, the signature steakhouse Prime, and The Lantern, an alfresco tea room flanking the riverside.

A highlight worth mentioning is the tea-pouring ceremony at Yuan, a 1920's Shanghai tradition, for which a tea specialist was flown in from China to train staff to master the art of pouring tea from a long-spouted teapot - the only one in Bangkok. And an art it is.

With conference and banqueting facilities to match - the entire 30th floor is dedicated to the trade-marked Hilton Meetings concept and the largest ballroom has a capacity for 900 delegates The Millennium Hilton has arrived with a bang. The final impressive feature, and by no means the least important, boils down to service standards.

No matter how much thought is put into design aesthetics and contemporary sensibilities, and no matter how many specialists are deployed to bring innovative features to a new hotel, it would all fall horribly flat if it isn't backed up by world-class service.

Bangkok Marriott Resort & Spa Review

If it wasn't for the fact that the Bangkok Marriott Resort &Spa is tucked away cosily on the banks of the Chao Phraya River instead of an idyllic beach, you'd guess that you're somewhere on an island in the Andaman Ocean. Other than that it has all the ingredients of a luxury beach resort.

Waving palm trees and lush, tropical vegetation in an eleven-acre garden oasis. Low-rise colonial-style buildings. A fabulous spa. Fine cuisine. Poolside frolics and bikini-cladded beauties.

An activities calendar to please young and old... Yet, the vibrant energy and metropolitan buzz of the Thai capital is no more than a leisurely 15-minute boat ride away.

The beautifully designed poolside area with the swim-or-walk-up-to Loy Nam Pool Bar fittingly takes centre-stage, with the main building and two wings arranged in a U-shape around it. As a result all 413 rooms, including 94 suites, have great views from open balconies onto the poolside area and gardens, as well as river glimpses to the open side of the 'U'.

But, if it's magical river views you're after, the suites will not disappoint. Balconies have been cleverly designed to face the river at an angle, so that you can also feast your eyes on the resort grounds and garden.

All rooms and suites were upgraded during 2005, and are luxuriously decorated and furnished with a subtle Thai flavour; muted tones, polished hardwood floors, a Thai motif bed runner with matching drapes, and Thai-inspired sculptures and paintings - the latter taken from ancient scripture books. The bathrooms were designed to be clean, crisp and bright to create a feeling of spaciousness.

Beige stone walls harmonize with beige floors in-laid with dark brown stone squares. Suites have separate shower stalls, double vanity sinks and deep bath tubs. Guests staying in the Junior or Executive suites are entitled to a variety of Club Lounge benefits too.

A major highlight is undoubtedly the inspiring, landscaped garden; offering a wonderful early-morning or late-afternoon exploration. The work of landscape designer Bill Bensley and the hotel's dedicated gardening team, the garden features a vast selection of indigenous flora, a great selection of herbs, and several walking paths with romantic, secluded moments. And elephants.

Nobody can tell me exactly how many, but I counted at least a hundred. Big ones and small ones; made from ceramic, stone, wood-carved, porcelain and brass. They're everywhere, and the result of Bill's passion for elephants. Talking of which, the choice of restaurants and bars will delight the most nose-in-the-air connoisseur. At the Riverside Terrace you can feast on an international and Thai buffet prepared by distinguished chefs in a 'show kitchen', accompanied by a glass of fine wine and a cultural performance.

Then there's Trader Vic's with its exotic cuisine, a renowned Japanese 'Teppanyaki' steakhouse called Benihana, fine Chinese cuisine at The Rice Mill, The Market offering international breakfast and lunch buffets, a coffee and pastry shop called Numero Uno, and the Longtail Bar next to the river.

And finally, since no visit to Bangkok will be complete without a trip on the historic Chao Praya River, the beautifully restored Manohra rice barges are available for sunset cocktails, dinner cruises and private charters.

For further indulgence, a full range of Thai-style massage and beauty treatments are offered at Mandara Spa,where guests are pampered in the splendour of lavish spa suites that come complete with private plunge pools and steam facilities. Specialties include herbal back treatment, salt radiance and Javanese Lulur.

Cooking enthusiasts have a choice to either learn the art of spa cuisine at the newly-launched Mandara Academy of Spa Cuisine - a first in Bangkok - or a more traditional take on Thai delicacies with a cooking class and Manohra river cruise combined, yet another Marriott initiative.

If it all sounds like fun and games, you're absolutely right. But don't forget the impressive 1,500 square meters of meeting and function room space that are available after recent renovations.

The two lobbies (groups are checked in separately) have had a make-over too, and a stunning waterfall now cascades down from the upper lobby to the lily pond of the lower lobby. All of which makes for an enhanced 'arrival experience'.

Montien Riverside Bangkok Review

Open since 1994, Montien Riverside Hotel is the youngest sibling of Montien Hotel Thailand. Located in the rapidly-growing Rama III area adjoining the Riverside, the hotel is far removed from the chaotic rush of downtown Bangkok, yet in close proximity to the city's popular business, shopping and entertainment attractions.

In addition to its desirable location on the banks of the Chao Phraya River are friendly service, a full range of impressive facilities and restaurants serving a mouthwatering selection of cuisine. A shuttle bus service takes guests to a nearby Skytrain station on the hour.

'Montien' in Thai means royal residence; a place of grandeur and opulence fit for royalty. Montien Riverside Hotel is perfectly worthy of the name with its 27-storey glass-fronted atrium and immaculately white exterior. With natural light invited through glass panes, the lobby is spacious and airy, accentuated by lofty European-style columns, a ceiling so high it makes one dizzy to look up, and an easy-on-the-eye colour scheme.

Despite its apparent vastness, the floor is sufficiently staffed - from the reception down to the bell boy counter. On the right hand side is a Bakery Shop and a couple of escalators leading up to function rooms.
A Tour Desk and arcade with small shops selling all kinds of souvenirs and knick-knacks are located in the left wing. Staff, graciously dressed in traditional attire, are quick to offer exceptional service, exemplifying Montien's concept of 'The Spirit of Thai Hospitality'.

The cleverly-designed Y-shaped building makes terrific river views possible from all rooms and suites; 462 of them, all of which are superbly appointed. Room types comprise of Superior Room, Deluxe Room, Executive Room, Executive Suite, Family Suite, Queen Suite, King Suite and Corner Room.

Executive Room guests enjoy extra touches of luxury and executive benefits with a butler service, complimentary breakfast and cocktail hour at the Executive Lounge (free snacks and drinks). Wi-Fi Internet access is available in rooms (costs extra). Bathrooms are large with separate bath and shower - rounded off by a full range of bathroom amenities.

For couples or honeymooners, Corner Rooms are highly recommended as they afford fantastic river views. Health-conscious guests will love the hotel's fully-equipped fitness centre with certified personal trainer on duty, tennis courts, outdoor swimming pool, sauna, steam and massage rooms. Also on offer are six different function rooms perfect for any event from a conference to a wedding.

Guests at Montien Riverside Hotel have a hard time deciding what to eat, as the hotel offers numerous restaurant outlets - including 24-hour The Cafe (International), Sai-Chol (Thai-Vietnamese), Sala Rimnam (al fresco BBQ - weather permitting), The Emperor (Chinese) and Harbour View (Italian).

Each restaurant has a monthly/seasonal promotion which features exclusively-made dishes not usually available at any other time of the year. If you're feeling peckish between meals, opt for fresh-out-of-the-oven pastries at the hotel's famous Bakery Shop. With a cup of coffee or tea, they make for the perfect afternoon snack.

Looking for some entertainment? Make your way to Sonic Karaoke, a karaoke facility featuring ten private rooms catering up to 30 people. Or if you prefer to listen rather than sing, great live music and an extensive selection of cocktails, wines and beers can be enjoyed at the Lobby Lounge, located one level below the lobby, overlooking a lush garden.

For an intimate dining experience, guests are welcomed on Montienthip, a converted river barge that will take you on an elegant cruise along the Chao Phraya River whilst enjoying a delicious set menu (Thai or Western), the sounds of the Thai 'khim' instrument and traditional dance show.

Besides the excellent service and hospitality it is renowned for, Montien Riverside Hotel's wide range of well-appointed accommodation and facilities cater to every guest's needs and requirements - be it for business or pleasure.

Surrounded by famous shopping chains like Central (Central Rama III) and HomePro, the hotel also enjoys convenient access to an expressway (45 minutes travel time to reach Suvarnabhumi International Airport). Getting to, from and around the city is made easy by the hotel's daily complimentary shuttle bus service to downtown and Saphan Taksin BTS station at Sathorn Pier.
